The overall goal of this 12-hour knowledge based program is to provide the pharmacist and technician with a review of the calculations they will need to make in order to prepare the variety of medications their patients may need to attain the greatest therapeutic actions from their medications with the fewest undesirable side effects.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians all compound medications at some level in their practice. A review of the major topics that will be included are the following:

  • ratio and proportion calculations
  • determination of osmolarity
  • isotonicity calculations
  • dilution and concentration of components
  • aliquots
  • milliequivalent calculations

Module 1 – Basic Compounding and Calculations – An Overview
Module 2 – Extemporaneous Prescription Compounding
Module 3 – Pharmacy Compounding
Module 4 – Pharmaceutical Calculations

Upon completion of this program, the Pharmacist should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to perform needed calculations
  • Identify the most appropriate calculation to be made
  • Review and check calculations of other pharmacists/technicians

Upon completion of this program, the Technician should be able to:

  • Recognize the need for a calculation to be made
  • Recognize what type of calculation is appropriate
  • Identify & accurately make all needed calculations

Basic Compounding and Calculations Home Study – An Overview Home Study, a knowledge-based course, has been approved for 12 contact hour (1.2 CEU) of continuing education credit obtained in the home study with ACPE Universal Activity Number UAN: 0201-0000-20-081-H07-P/T. Attendees will be required to complete an evaluation form at the completion of the program. Attendees requesting CE will be required to provide their NABP e-Profile ID and birthdate (MMDD) to receive credit for any ACPE-accredited CPE session. Due to new ACPE regulations, if required information is received after 60 days, a $250 late fee will be assessed before CE will be processed.
