US Surgeon General Requests Input on Community Health Initiatives

The Office of the Surgeon General has commissioned a report demonstrating the intersection between health and the economy in order to show that investments in community health have the potential to improve not only the well-being, but also the prosperity of communities.

Dr. Jerome Adams believes preventing chronic diseases and behavioral health issues is more cost effective than treating them. Investments in community health is a key prevention strategy to produce greater individual and community health and well-being and ultimately lead to greater economic and overall prosperity. The Surgeon General will compile the available evidence and best practices documenting the connection between private sector investment in the health of their employees and communities and collective prosperity, and issue a report to share the evidence, inspire future research and provide tools and resources for effective, efficient community health investments that produce results.

The Surgeon General wants to build upon the community health work that has already been done and would like to hear from you about the initiatives you are doing to address community health and prosperity. 

Independent pharmacists are in a unique position as front-line health care providers to interact with and influence the community health through innovative programs. Click here to submit your ideas, examples, and experiences to Docket No. CDC-2018-0082 in the Federal Register.

Call For Nominations

Nominations are now open for the 2019 ACA Board of Directors. This year, there is one Regional Director seat for which candidates are sought as well as nominees for the position of ACA Vice President.

ACA Members may submit themselves or a colleague as a potential candidate to the 2018 Nominating Committee no later than November 2, 2018 using the link below.

Board&nbspPosition Eligible for Nominations Term
Vice President Any Full Fellow in good standing with the College. The Vice President shall serve for one year or until such time as their successor shall be elected or selected as provided by the ACA Constitution. The Vice President automatically becomes the ACA President-Elect, ACA President and then ACA Chairman.
Region 2 Any Full Fellow from:
District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia
For a three-year term expiring in 2022.

be standing as a candidate.

The Regional Director shall be elected by vote of the Full Fellows within the Region represented from nominees presented by the Region. Proper ballots shall be prepared and distributed under the direction of the Vice President of Operations. Such elections must be completed no later than one month before the date of the annual meeting. Duly elected Directors shall be seated at the annual meeting of the College immediately following their election.

The Vice President shall be elected annually by a majority of the votes of Full Fellows cast by ballot. Ballots shall be prepared and distributed under the direction of the Vice President of Operations. Such elections must be completed no later than one month before the date of the annual meeting. (The ballot shall be conducted by the procedure outlined in the duties of the Nominating Committee.)

Nominations Committee: The Nominations Committee shall be composed of Fellows in good standing with the College in addition to David Liebman, ACA President, and the ACA’s Past Presidents. Ryan Oftebro, ACA Past President, serves as Chairman.

Objectives: To recognize and seek qualified nominees for the Vice President position of the association.

Duties:

  • Review requirements for nominees.
  • Review duties of each elected officer as outlined in the Bylaws.
  • Provide ACA with a slate of officers that is balanced in terms of new as well as experienced officers.
  • Provide ACA with a slate of officers that is balanced in terms of membership (e.g. ACA, ACVP, demographics, etc.).

ACA Regional Director Marisol Lopez, RPh, MPH, FACA, FACVP represents the American College of Apothecaries at the Puerto Rico Pharmacists Association (CFPR) Meeting August 16-19 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

ACA began teaching Fundamental and Dermatology compounding courses in Puerto Rico in January 2018 thanks to a special arrangement with Columbia Central University in Caguas.

Today, the US Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, recommended that anybody using an opioid-based painkiller — for a medical condition or recreationally — have naloxone on hand, and that their friends and family should have it as well.  The American College of Apothecaries applauds the position of the Surgeon General and echo the use of naloxone to help save lives.  The Chairman of the Board of ACA, Dr. Ryan Oftebro, was one of the original pharmacist pioneers to champion the ability of the pharmacist to dispense naloxone without a prescription.  “This lifesaving drug can reverse the overdose effects of opioids and save lives,” said Donnie Calhoun, CEO and Executive Vice President of ACA, “and we encourage pharmacies to carry and follow their state law to dispense it.  We also encourage pharmacists to properly train the user on how to administer the drug so that the full benefit can be used to save lives.”

We are reviewing the guidance document and we welcome the opportunity to provide comments. Public health and safety is paramount and ACA, as a best practice organization, is ready to assist our members with compliance with the new guidance. Compounding is a vital part of the treatment choices physicians have to treat disease. As with any drug, the benefit should always outweigh the risk. We want to help compounders lower that risk and improve outcomes for those thousands of patients that depend on compounded prescriptions.

Dixie Leikach Named 2017 ACA Member of the Year

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL, March 2, 2018: The American College of Apothecaries presented the 2017 ACA Member of the Year Award to Dixie Leikach, RPh, MBA, FACA, of Finksburg, Maryland, Vice President of Operations for YOUR Community Pharmacy and President of PEER Rx.  The presentation was made during the Presidents’ Banquet Friday evening, at the College’s 2018 Annual Educational Conference hosted at the Ponte Vedra Beach Club Resort.  The award is presented to a member of the College for exceptional accomplishment and effort in promoting the College and community pharmacy.

Dixie and her husband, Neil, also a pharmacist, are committed to preserving independent pharmacy and are working to provide opportunities for other pharmacists to become owners of their own pharmacies. Dixie and Neil opened their first pharmacy, Catonsville Pharmacy, in February of 1999. Finksburg Pharmacy followed in 2003 and Paradise Professional Pharmacy opened in 2007. In June 2017, Dixie and Neil were honored with Excellence in Innovation Award by the Maryland Pharmacists Association, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and Upsher-Smith.

Recognizing the need for increased awareness of the role of ethics in pharmacy, Dixie founded Pharmacy Ethics, Education and Resources, Inc. (PEER), a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to educating health care professionals on ethics in order to improve patient safety. Dixie has also created the PEER Ethics Continuing Education Series and certificate program for individuals.

A 1992 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Dixie is a Past President of the Lambda Kappa Sigma International Pharmacy Fraternity, the Maryland Pharmacists Association, and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Alumni Association.

In 1998, Dixie was selected as the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year for both the state of Maryland and LKS. In 2012, she received the LKS Distinguished Service Citation. In 2015, she received the LKS Merck Vanguard Leadership Award.

As an ACA Fellow, Dixie has served the College through roles on the ACA Board of Directors and on multiple committees, including admissions, membership and programs.

American College of Apothecaries Announces New Vice-President, Regional Directors

A new Vice-President and five new directors have been named to the American College of Apothecaries (ACA) Board of Directors. The ACA Board of Directors is made up of ACA Fellows representing 13 geographical regions of the United States and Canada and Executive Officers.

Elections for board Vice-President and Regional Directors for regions 6, 7, 9, and 13 were conducted in November among the Fellows. Regional Directors will serve three-year terms commencing in 2018.

Earlier this month, Elaine Ladd, RPh, FACA was appointed by the ACA Board of Directors to fulfill the remainder of the term left vacant by the resignation of Roland Lopez for Region 11.  Ladd will serve through 2019.

Shara Rudner, RPh, FACA, FACVP, FIACP – Vice-President

Shara Rudner holds a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island, College of Pharmacy and is currently Clinical Trials and Special Project Coordinator for Pharmacy Innovations. Shara is a Fellow of the American College of Apothecaries (ACA), the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists (ACVP), and the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP). Prior to her election as Vice-President, Shara has served ACA as the Director for region 2 since 2016.  Shara has received numerous professional awards, including ACVP’s Earl W. “Bill” Bradley Award for Outstanding Service to Veterinary Pharmacy 2008 and is a regular presenter at professional conferences. She is a founding Board Member of STOMP The Monster™.

Nancy Stoehr, PharmD, FACA, FIACP – Region 6 (Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin)

Nancy Stoehr earned her PharmD from the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Pharmacy in 2006 and is an Assistant Professor at Concordia University Wisconsin School of Pharmacy since 2012 where her teaching focus is pharmaceutical dosage forms and extemporaneous pharmaceutical compounding for the community patient. Her research focuses on stability and quality of compounded dosage forms and formulation development as well as scholarship of teaching and learning within the non-sterile compounding laboratory. Nancy is currently continuing her pharmacy practice as a compounding pharmacist with Skywalk Pharmacy in Milwaukee, WI which has a non-sterile pediatric community compounding focus. She enjoys incorporating practice and research into her education of technicians, pharmacists and future pharmacists.

Nicholas R. Smock, PharmD, MBA, FACA – Region 7 (Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska)

Nick Smock received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Missouri in 1983, his Masters of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1990, and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2002. He serves as the President and CEO of the Pharmacy Buying Association (PBA), a pharmacy member co-op, since 1998 and previously served as Vice President, COO, CFO and Director of Contracts. Nick spent several years as a practicing pharmacist prior to joining PBA/TrueCare.

Nathan D. Pope, PharmD, FACA, BCACP – Region 9 (Texas)

Nathan Pope is currently Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy (UT-Austin) since 2008. He received his B.S. and PharmD from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey in 2002, subsequently completed a Community Pharmacy Residency in Houston, Texas, and received Board Certification in Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (BCACP) in 2015. He has worked various community pharmacy settings and is Residency Program Director for the H-E-B Pharmacy which partnered with the College in 2008 to create an innovative post-graduate educational experience in the community pharmacy setting. He is the faculty advisor to the UT-Austin student chapter of NCPA which has been awarded Student Chapter of the Year for four of the last six years.  Nathan is a clinical instructor for ACA, teaching compounding courses at the National Training Laboratory and on-site compounding training.

Elaine Ladd, PharmD, ABAAHP, FAARFM, FACA – Region 11 (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington)

Elaine Ladd is a Client Manager with Pharmacy Development Services, bringing years of experience leading clinical development and directing enhanced pharmacy services. Previously, Elaine served as founder and pharmacist-in-charge of a hybrid community pharmacy. She is a former clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Idaho State University College of Pharmacy with over a decade of teaching experience.  She is an active member of numerous organizations and has served on national and state committees in the interest of pharmacy on important topics such as patient safety, infection control, leadership development, preventative health and compounding.  She is certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging Health Practitioners, and received a fellowship in Anti-Aging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Ben Smith, RPh, FACA – Region 13 (Canada) 

Ben Smith is the owner of a dozen pharmacies scattered throughout small towns in central Ontario. He graduated from pharmacy school at the University of Toronto in 1966 and purchased his first pharmacy in 1979 in a small community in Ontario. He attributes his achievements to an old-fashioned recipe of hard work, long hours, ongoing continuing education, generously giving back to the communities his pharmacies serve, being as accessible as possible to patients, and cultivating strong personal relationships with local physicians. Ben served the ACA as President in 2013 and Chairman in 2014. He has served on the ACA Admission Committee for many years and on numerous ACA committees. He is also a member of the Ontario Pharmacists Association and the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association.

The ACA is Growing — Again!

ACA International Pharmacist MemberJust a year after establishing the Pharmacist Member, New Practitioner, and Dual Fellow membership categories, the American College of Apothecaries is once again expanding its scope in an effort to encourage and support independent pharmacy worldwide.  The ACA’s new International Pharmacist Member category grants independent pharmacists working in countries outside of the United States and Canada access to the benefits, discounts, and opportunities for networking and professional development offered by the ACA at a reduced rate. ACA’s sister organization, the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, has also created an International Pharmacist Member level.

“We’re contacted regularly by independent pharmacists around the globe who are interested in the services that ACA offers,” said Donnie Calhoun, CEO | Executive Vice-President of the American College of Apothecaries and American College of Veterinary Pharmacists.  “We’ve even gone to London, England to provide on-site training. But we want to have a long-term relationship with our international pharmacists, provide them with all of the benefits of ACA membership, but also take into consideration differences in compensation worldwide.”

The International Pharmacist Member category is open to any licensed pharmacist residing outside of the United States or Canada who meets the association’s Practice Standards and has a $100 annual membership fee. Pharmacist members may apply for Fellowship at any time.

UPDATE: Hurricane Maria Impact on ACA | ACVP Annual Conference & Expo

To our Members and Fellows,

By now everyone is aware of the tragic events caused by Hurricane Maria in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.  Over a year ago, ACA contracted with the El Conquistador Hotel to host our 2018 ACA|ACVP Annual Conference & Expo.  Due to the damage sustained in the hurricane and the damage to the island’s infrastructure, we have had to make the difficult decision to move our meeting to another location.

We were looking forward to hosting our event in Puerto Rico and build strong relationships with the local pharmacists and technician.  We want to send our thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters on the Island, and to let them know that we will be back.  Back to support pharmacy and the people.  For right now, we are encouraging our members who want to do more to help Puerto Rico to donate to organizations such as One America AppealUnidos Por Puerto Rico or  Voices for Puerto Rico. Animal welfare organizations assisting shelters and animals impacted by Hurricane Maria include the Humane Society of the United States and Wings of Rescue.

We will be announcing a new venue for the 2018 ACA|ACVP Annual Conference & Expo in the next few days.  Thank all of you for your patience and your support for those affected by Maria.  Our event will still be special, with outstanding speakers, quality vendors, and great fellowship.  Please be on the lookout for our announcement and feel free to call the office (901-383-8119) if we can assist you in any way.

ACA Foundation Honors Professor Donald Downing for Outstanding Service to Pharmacy Education

Don DowningThe American College of Apothecaries presented the 2016-17 Albert E. Rosica, Jr. Memorial Award to Don Downing of Seattle, Washington at the College’s 2017 Fall Pharmacy Conference at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The award, established in memory of Albert E. Rosica, Jr., a Past President of ACA, is presented each year to a pharmacy practitioner for his or her contributions to pharmacy education through participation in pharmacy clerkship programs, serving on various college committees, teaching, working with the alumni association, and making other contributions to academic programs.

For the past forty years, Don Downing has devoted his career as a professor and practitioner to moving the profession of pharmacy forward.  A graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, Downing currently directs the Institute for Innovative Pharmacy Practice at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. Downing teaches on topics including legislative advocacy, leadership and ethics and is a prolific advocate for pharmacists, patients and underserved populations.

In 1975, Downing helped to start up the Puyallup Tribal Health Authority clinic in Tacoma, Washington and continued there until 1985. While there, he joined the Washington School of Pharmacy faculty and later opened the first pharmacy in Bonney Lake and a community pharmacy in Federal Way. He continues to consult with and develop pharmacy services for various Native American tribes.

Peggy Soule Odegard, Associate Dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, commended Downing’s dedication to pharmacy. “Don exemplifies the meaning of teaching by example and is a major contributor to the professional development of our pharmacy graduates…. He embodies a service attitude for his students and peers, kindly nudging each of us to become involved to improve access to services for those who are less fortunate. He reaches out with regular service to communities both locally and throughout the world to help those in need, modeling compassionate care for his students and often facilitating and advocating for necessary change to reduce disparities during his visits.”

Downing developed the nation’s first pharmacist-provided emergency contraception program and the first pharmacist-initiated ongoing hormonal contraception services. He also helped lead the effort in the 1990s to educate and certify pharmacists in Washington state and numerous other states to provide flu shots and other vaccines.  Downing has worked on pharmacy-care legislation in 39 states, devoting much of his energy to changing the public’s perception of pharmacists. In addition, he has conducted extensive research with funding from agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, the National Institutes of Health, Advocates for Youth and the Packard Foundation.

Downing has received numerous recognitions from local, state, and national pharmacy organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association’s Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Distinguished Achievement Award, the Washington State Pharmacy Association David Almquist Award and Pharmacist of the Year Award, and the UW School of Pharmacy’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and Milo Gilbaldi Excellence in Teaching Award.

 The American College of Apothecaries Research and Education Foundation is honored to recognize Don Downing for his contributions to the future of pharmacy and global health and impact on his students, peers, and community.
